A Disturbing Concern
Food insecurity among college students is a disturbing concern and in
many cases is overlooked by fellow students, faculty, administrators, and
the local community. Food insecurity dramatically impacts student
success through depression, anxiety, lowered concentration, and lack of
energy. These major factors negatively affect academic performance.
Recent studies have indicated an average of over 40% food insecurity
among all college students. Sadly, students of color are more likely to
experience food insecurity than their white counterparts. This can lead to
increased drop-out rates among minority students which leads to lower
graduation rates. The Floyd Turner Foundation endeavors to support food
insecure minority students through philanthropic initiatives and increasing overall awareness.
